Carrow House Bearing Cloth

The original bearing cloth was donated to Carrow House Textile Study Centre, in 1939. We are currently involved with a project together with Strangers Hall Museum, in Norwich, and the Norfolk & Wayland Lacemakers, to recreate a 17C bearing cloth used at christenings, before the advent of christening gowns as we know them.

When finished it will be used as part of the handling collection at Strangers Hall. The original is beautiful but very, very fragile; it is our intention to recreate the lace using authentic materials and techniques. The lace is made of gold and silver thread, which has been commissioned in the traditional manner. We have raised over £300 towards the thread so far. The pattern has been redrawn and we are in the process of producing the lace.
